Is So

Important?

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Every 67 minutes someone dies from melanoma. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 62,000 new melanomas will be diagnosed in the United States each year and more than one million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are also found. Protecting our skin from sun can prevent up to 80% of these skin cancers, and nearly 80% of all sun damage is done to our skin by the time we are 18 years old. These little-known facts stimulated dermatologists at The Skin Institute at the Rapid City Medical Center and local parents to organize and raise funds to provide shade on playgrounds.
